No doubt about it: San Diego is a military town — to the tune of $26 billion.
That’s what a regional defense group says the Navy, Marine Corps and defense industry pumps into San Diego County each year in salaries, contracts and other spending, more than double the amount from before Sept. 11, according to a report released in April.
That’s a hike from the $24.6 billion the San Diego Military Affairs Council estimates the military pumped into the local economy in 2008, and more than double the $12 billion presence in 2000.
In the Hampton Roads, Va., region, defense expenditures reached $13.8 billion in 2008, according to Frank Roberts, executive director of the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance. In Hawaii, the military in 2008 had a $6.8 billion impact, while it topped $7.6 billion in the Pacific Northwest region and $6.1 billion in the Mayport, Fla.-Kings Bay, Ga., region, according to 2004 figures from local chambers of commerce.
More than 328,000 jobs are linked to San Diego County’s defense economy — nearly one-quarter of the region’s job market.
The Navy’s shift of forces to the Pacific has brought more sailors and vessels to San Diego, including the attack submarine Albuquerque and the return of the carrier Carl Vinson.
