For years, human rights groups and governments around the world have strongly petitioned for the release of Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, an Iranian woman who was sentenced to death by stoning in 2006 for allegedly committing adultery and for complicity in the murder of her husband.
The pressure led in 2010 to Sakineh’s execution being stayed indefinitely, but Sakineh and her lawyer have remained in prison ever since.
Human rights activists say they are organizing an International Day Against Stoning on July 11 to demand Sakineh’s immediate release and an end to stoning in Iran.
“Join us by either standing in a city square with a photo or poster of Sakineh, tweeting, or by organizing an act of solidarity or a flash mob to raise awareness and attention,” the International Committee Against Stoning (ICAS) writes. “On 11 July, in 100 cities worldwide, let us once again raise the banner of humanity against one of the barbarisms of our time.”
ICAS includes well-known human rights activist Maryam Namazie, who served as the executive director of the International Federation of Iranian Refugees, is the spokesperson for the One Law for All Campaign against Sharia Law in Britain, and previously protested the Muhammad cartoons controversy by calling Islamism the “new totalitarianism.”
